How God is Described in Proverbs

The Book of Proverbs contains 31 chapters of wisdom for our daily lives. A good portion of it was written by King Solomon, the wisest and most successful man in all of human history. I would say that since he was the wisest man on earth, he has some pretty good insights to teach us how to glorify the Lord and become wise. Proverbs 1:7 tells us: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” I trust this resource from the NIV Life Applications Study Bible will be a blessing to you. Be sure to pass it on to others!

How God is Described in Proverbs

Proverbs 15:3, 8–9, 11, 16

God…

is aware of all that happens (Proverbs 15:3)
knows the hearts of all people (Proverbs 15:11; 16:2; 21:2)
controls all things (Proverbs 16:33; 21:30)
is a place of safety (Proverbs 18:10)
rescues good people from danger (Proverbs 11:8, 21)
condemns the wicked (Proverbs 11:31)
hears and delights in our prayers (Proverbs 15:8, 29)
loves those who obey him (Proverbs 15:9; 22:12)
cares for the poor and needy (Proverbs 15:25; 22:22, 23)
tests and purifies hearts (Proverbs 17:3)
hates evil (Proverbs 17:5; 21:27; 28:9)

Our response should be…

to fear and revere God (Proverbs 10:27; 14:26, 27; 15:16; 16:6; 19:23; 28:14)
to obey God’s Word (Proverbs 13:13; 19:16)
to please God by doing what is right and just (Proverbs 21:3)
to trust in God (Proverbs 22:17–19; 29:25)

This is truly a book about wise living. It often focuses on a person’s response and attitude toward God, who is the source of wisdom. And a number of proverbs point out aspects of God’s character. Knowing God helps us on the way to wisdom.
