A Christian Response to Charlie Kirk’s Death: 10 Reasons We’re Grieving

3 min read

This Week Has Been Heartbreaking

It’s been 7 days since Charlie’s murder… and I’ll be honest — it’s taken me a while to even process what happened, let alone write anything about it. I’m still processing it now. But I knew I needed to get some of these thoughts out, both for myself and for those who feel the same weight I do.

This week has been heartbreaking, confusing, eye-opening, and painfully important. We lost someone great — and many of us feel like the wind’s been knocked out of us.

We mourn. Not like those who have no hope — but like Jesus did in John 11:35. The shortest verse in the Bible, but one of the most powerful: “Jesus wept.”

“His tears here were not generated out of mourning, since he was to raise Lazarus, but out of grief for a fallen world entangled in sin-caused sorrow and death.”
— John MacArthur

That’s what many of us are feeling now — not just mourning Charlie’s death, but grieving the depth of evil and brokenness in this world. If you’ve found yourself weeping over someone you never personally met, you’re not alone. There are real reasons it hurts this much — and they’re worth exploring.

Over the past few days, I’ve been reading, listening, and talking with other believers who are also mourning. What follows is a list I’ve compiled — a blend of my own thoughts and what I’ve heard echoed by countless others who feel this same deep sense of loss.

10 Reasons Why Charlie’s Death Hits So Hard

  1. The Spiritual War Just Got Real
This wasn’t some distant political debate — this was the spiritual battle between good and evil breaking into the physical world. It’s no longer theory. It’s reality.
  2. He Died for What We All Believe
Charlie was targeted for standing on convictions every Bible-believing Christian should boldly hold. It could’ve been any of us.
  3. We Lost a Spiritual Captain
Charlie was gifted, sharp, and uniquely anointed. It’s like losing a team captain who inspired confidence and momentum. Now there’s a void.
  4. His Death Was Public and Violent
The brutality and public nature of it was dehumanizing — especially for someone made in the image of God and loved by so many.
  5. Wicked People Are Celebrating
Progressives and their demonic ideologies are rejoicing. That’s not just painful — it’s revolting and evil.
  6. Our Hearts Break for His Family
His kids will grow up hearing about their dad but won’t get to know him personally. That’s a grief no child should bear.
  7. We Felt Like We Knew Him
Many of us spent countless hours listening to Charlie speak, learning from him, growing with him. It feels personal — because in many ways, it was.
  8. He Was the American Dream
A self-made leader, bold and brilliant, who built something world-changing with little more than vision and grit. That kind of story should be honored, not silenced.
  9. His Life Was Cut Short Too Soon
Young, healthy, strong — yet taken. A gut-wrenching reminder of life’s fragility and how none of us are promised tomorrow.
  10. We Can’t Fix It
We’re left powerless to undo the loss. That helplessness forces us to confront our limits — and our deep need for God.

You don’t have to feel guilty for mourning someone you never personally met.
You did know him — through his life, his voice, and his convictions.

And yes, you’re allowed to feel sorrow and righteous anger.
But let it push you into something greater: a holy resolve.

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
