Today, my study is on John 1:5 & Matthew 5:14-16 where we read:
John 1:5 – The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
These verses go so beautifully together that they both refer to the power of God’s Light.
John MacArthur, in his ESV Bible Commentary, says, “Darkness is not able to overcome or conquer the light. Just as a single candle can overcome a room filled with darkness, so also the powers of darkness are overcome by the person and work of the Son through his death on the cross (cf. 19:11a).”
He also stated in his commentary on Matthew 5:16 – A godly life gives convincing testimony of the saving power of God. That brings Him glory.
A life marked by shining light is one that is unable to be overcome by the darkness (sin and evil) of this world.
Today, whether you’re battling fear and worry, you’re dreading a conversation, discouraged about a relationship, or whatever it is… remember these two beautiful passages in Scripture, along with the two above:
Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Romans 8:28 – And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
God’s Light, His Spirit, will shine through today… embrace it and rejoice that you have been chosen to love His Light, bask in His Light, and be a reflection of His Light to the world and those around you. Glorify your Father in Heaven today by reflecting His Light.
Go in peace and strength today with this great hope that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
